Vote early at your county courthouse, annex, or designated community voting location during business hours. No excuse needed.

Last day for your county clerk to receive your absentee ballot application.

Voting absentee

West Virginia requires a valid excuse to vote absentee by mail, such as being out of the county during the voting period, illness or injury, work hours, or a disability. If you qualify, apply online or through your county clerk by October 28, 2026.

Every registered voter can vote early in person October 21–31 with no excuse. If absentee rules don't fit your situation, early voting is the easiest option.

What to bring: voter ID

West Virginia requires an approved, unexpired photo ID to vote in person (early or on Election Day). Accepted IDs include:

West Virginia driver's license or WV ID card
U.S. passport or military ID
Student photo ID from a West Virginia high school or college
Voter registration card that includes your photo

Photo ID rules do not apply to absentee-by-mail voters. See the Secretary of State's ID guide for the full list and exceptions.
